Repentance & Forgiveness
I gave a version of this talk several Sundays ago. I don’t know why I didn’t post it before now. I started, but never got it finished, sorry.
Rarely do I write out my talks in their entirety, so I give you just the outline. While it may lack some readability (or even coherence), it is short.
- There is often no excuse for our sins [D&C 3:7.5-11]
- Hard to forgive others without an excuse.
- As often as repent, forgiven [Moroni 6:8]
- Whether deserve it or not
- We don’t deserve it
- Lord doesn’t remember sins any more [D&C 58:42]
- Why a big deal?
- No desire to do evil, but good continually [Mosiah 5:2]
- Sin -> increase desire to sin -> decrease desire to repent
- Good and Evil attract us like magnets
- Better person = easier to repent [C.S. Lewis]
- Atonement is infinite and eternal [Alma 34:10-12]
- We don’t understand infinity—we can’t
- Atonement gives Christ power [2 Nephi 31:19]
- Don’t underestimate the power of the atonement and willingness / eagerness to forgive
- (All) We need is a broken heart and contrite spirit [2 Nephi 2:7]
- Otherwise God cease to be God [Alma 42:13]
- Not partaking of the sacrament trivializes the atonement unless:
- Commanded not to
- Not willing to give up (no broken heart)
Add self-deprecation and Mormon humor to taste, and you will have a nutritious meal suitable for any occasion. Best served hot.
