As we prepare to celebrate the arrival of the New Year, remember to gather all the Sacrament Programs from throughout the year for the Midwinter Sacrament Program Conflagration. Some believe that this tradition stems from pagan practices of burning Christian missionaries, and there may be some truth to it, but MSPC has become a thoroughly Christianized holiday. The Sacrament Programs represent the first fruits of our flocks, which we have been commanded to sacrifice—the smoke wafting it’s “sweet savor” up to heaven. The flames themselves represent the purifying power of the spirit. The destruction of all the previous years programs is reminiscent of repentance and giving our sins to the Lord. As you burn your programs tonight (it is acceptable to print some out specifically for the celebration), please remember the reason for the season.
