My daughter went to another school’s prom yesterday and that made me reflect on the world’s first prom. Or rather, the SPROM (later shortened to PROM) which occurred in early 1843. The Sacrament Programs Reaching Optimal Maturation marked the start of Sacrament Program dating. At that point, Sacrament Programs were allowed to date other pamphlets to eventually get married. The first marriage of a Sacrament Program was, predictably, a brochure for “Gethsemane Vineyard” introducing their new line of red wines. It took place on July 24, 1847 in the Salt Lake Valley and was officiated by Brigham Young. “This is the place” was actually meant to indicate the makeshift chapel in which to marry the two lovebird flyers. They had been very affectionate (frankly sickening) on the trek west and Brigham couldn’t wait to get them married.
